By recruiting Jean Avellaneda in the summer of 1956, Racing's management made a bold gamble. A former player for Bordeaux and Marseille, he was a renowned coach who had developed several young players, notably at Perpignan. His playing principles had made him a reference point in France. Throughout his career, he advocated a possession-based game with short passes, a far cry from the principles of the time that focused on long balls and physical combat. Unfortunately, his principles were short-lived in Alsace. Despite a good start to the 1956-1957 season, Racing was relegated to Division 2 with a squad he considered technically limited, despite the presence of the legendary Ernst Stojaspal. In his own words, he doesn't have fond memories of his time at the club, except for the region. Which is not insignificant for a pure Latin, originally from North Africa and of Spanish descent.
